Depth will be from the front to the back of the sofa. The legs can add up to a foot to the sofa’s width, which may become a problem when rounding corners or moving up narrow hallways. Cover the sofa with moving blankets to protect the upholstery from damage and stains. Measure both the stairway and the sofa to ensure it will fit all the way up the stairway. Be sure to measure all hallways and other passages that lead to the final destination.

Several years a go, we determined that the increase cost of designing a typical 2,000 sf house to UD standards was $250; but the Designer needs to plan that from the beginning. Slide the couch toward the doorway, then move it through the door straight or at a hooking movement with the chair’s rear going into the doorway. If the sofa could be transferred horizontally and flat, only carry the couch straight out at a flat position. Maintaining the door in position reduces doorway opening width by up to 1 1/4 inches.
If possible, get more than a couple of helpers to help you move your big furniture pieces. Remember that when it comes to moving furniture, strength comes in numbers. The standard three-seat sofa is about 84” wide, 40” deep, and about 33” tall. Loveseats, on the other hand, tend to be even smaller, at 52” wide and 33” deep, with a height that’s about equal at 33” . When sofa shopping, use these measurements as the maximum sofa dimensions that will fit your space. Look for sofas that either roughly fit those dimensions or are slightly smaller.
